Frequently Asked Questions

Question:
When will the winners of the SOM Research Prize be announced?

Foundation Response:
The Foundation Board is currently in the process of reviewing all submissions for the SOM Research Prize and convening the jury. We expect this to be completed within a few weeks. We greatly appreciate your participation and patience.

Question:
I am a faculty member at a school of Architectural Engineering and Construction and interested in applying for the 2018 SOM Research Prize though I am teaching Architectural Engineering (not Architecture).

Foundation Response:
Pursuant to the eligibility requirements you are eligible if your institution is a U.S. school with accredited degree programs (BArch, MArch, MDes, BA, BS, MA, MS, PhD) in Architecture, Design or Urban Design. The research is expected to involve interdisciplinary collaboration with non-architecture disciplines. The requirement for “a design studio structured to further investigate the subject” should be hosted by an accredited degree program per the above referenced requirement.

Question:
Are international professors and faculty members allowed to apply – example a professor at a University not in the U.S.?

Foundation Response:
Applicants are eligible if currently teaching at a U.S. school with accredited degree programs (BArch, MArch, MDes, BA, BS, MA, MS, PhD) in Architecture, Design or Urban Design. Collaborating institutions may be international.

Question:
How do we would go about indicating our institution's overhead/indirect cost rate on the Humanizing High Density grant proposal. Should we simply indicate our overhead  costs as a separate line item in the budget?

Foundation Response:
The primary objective is to understand how the funds will be used. If a portion will be applied to overhead costs, please list them as a separate line item and indicate what costs are included in the overhead rate.

Question:
We are in the process of creating an application and we were wondering if the grant money could be applied to travel for a whole studio rather than the professor leading the research investigation? We are using this link (https://somfoundation.som.com/fellows-2018) as a reference for how to structure our application and it appears to be individual grants awarded for independent study.

Foundation Response:
The web page you are referencing are fellows from the discontinued prior format of the SOM prize which had previously been an individual traveling grant. Please structure your grant proposal per the requirements of the SOM Research Prize. https://somfoundation.som.com/award/som-research-prize The quality of work during both the research as well as design studio portions of the proposal are considered equally important. Therefore, the usage of the grant money in a manner that best supports the pursuit of quality in either area is consistent with the goals.

Question:
I am a Development Coordinator with the UCLA College of Letters and Science. I am working with faculty members on a potential proposal for the 2018 Research Prize and would like to know if the prize will be awarded to the researcher directly or to the institution where s/he teaches?

Foundation Response:
It may be awarded to the researchers or the institution depending on how the proposal is framed.

Question:
I realize that Humanizing High Density is the theme of this year's SOM Foundation’s prize- But wanted to ask if a rigorous and timely multidisciplinary research on innovative material interfaces and functionally graded materials that will benefit the advancement of sustainable design and construction practices and industries would also have a chance this year for this or other awards that you may be aware of?

Foundation Response:
We appreciate that there are many important topics that the profession can and needs to address. The objective of the SOM Foundation Research Prize is to address these issues over the course of several cycles. This year, proposals need to address the specified topic.

Question:
Is this award only open to faculty members at accredited U.S. institutions? I am a professor of architecture at a university in Pakistan and feel I would be able to submit a proposal for this grant that could be implemented in the United States, if necessary. Please let me know if there is any possibility to open the eligibility pool to foreign professors as well.

Foundation Response:
The SOM Foundation awards prizes in several categories including several international components. For this prize, proposers need to meet the eligibility requirements. This can include teams that are a combination of an international institution partnered with an accredited US insitution.
